Horsham Profiles

by Brian Slyfield

The Horsham Society, through its Newsletter, is known for featuring articles about the history of the town and its vicinity, and the publication has long been an important source of such information, thanks to articles provided by members. One such is Brian Slyfield, a past editor of the Newsletter and a current contributor to it, who over the years has created an extensive body of material, unmatched elsewhere among our local history sources.

Since 2000 over 300 articles have been produced, of varying length and with a range of subjects - local individuals and families, places, events and activities, and accounts of criminals and trials (Horsham was for many years a centre for the dispensation of justice). A wide range of sources has been utilised, including detailed information and contemporary reports from early copies of local newspapers, together with material from a private collection of rare antiquarian books relating to Horsham and Sussex. Many of the articles have already been published, and others will be, but all are freely available to both Society members and non-members - indeed anyone who may be following their own line of research or might simply wish to know a little more about a certain topic.

So to request a paper copy of any article please write to Brian Slyfield, Arun House, Denne Road, Horsham RH12 1JF, enclosing a stamped addressed envelope large enough to take 1-3 folded A4 sheets, quoting the required article’s reference number. Please note that all articles remain the copyright of the author, and should not be reproduced without prior permission.

Articles that have already been published may include support illustrations, while as yet unpublished ones will generally consist of text only.

The catalogue of articles is being added to on a regular basis, and will be updated from time to time. It can be found here.
